3 lakh plus Covid cases added for second day; India’s Cumulative Vaccination Coverage exceeds 13.54 Crores

India added more than 3.3 lakh cases yesterday, the second consecutive day it added over three lakh new cases and a new record for any country anywhere in the world. No country had so far added these many cases for two consecutive days.

Thursday also marked the 17th consecutive day that more than a lakh new cases have been added, and the impact is evident on the healthcare system and the surge in daily fatalities. For the 10th consecutive day, India witnessed over 1,000 daily deaths, of which the last three days saw over 2,000 daily deaths. In the past 10 days alone, over 15,000 people have died because of Covid or related complications.

 

 

Among states, Maharashtra continued to lead with 67,013 new cases. Uttar Pradesh (34,379), Kerala (26,995), Delhi (26,169), and Karnataka (25,795) were the other four states that reported over 25,000 daily cases.

Chattisgarh reported 16,750 new cases while cases reported from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh were between 10,000 and 15,000. Similarly, cases reported from Haryana, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana and Punjab were between 5,000 and 10,000. Even smaller states like Uttarakhand, J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Goa have also reported 1,000- 5,000 cases. With 1,931 new cases, Assam is the only large state on this list.

As in cases, Maharashtra is also leading the country in daily deaths as the state reported 568 deaths on Thursday. It was followed by the national capital, which reported 306 deaths and Chattisgarh, which reported 207 deaths. Uttar Pradesh (195), Gujarat (137) and Karnataka (123) were the other states that reported over a hundred deaths on Thursday. Apart from these states, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal and Haryana all reported over 50 deaths.

The cumulative number of COVID19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 13.54 Cr today as part of the world’s largest vaccination drive. Cumulatively, 13,54,78,420 vaccine doses have been administered through 19,38,184 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 am today. These include 92,42,364 HCWs who have taken the 1st dose and 59,04,739 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 1,17,31,959 FLWs (1stdose), 60,77,260 FLWs (2nddose), 4,85,34,810 1st dose beneficiaries and 65,21,662 2nd dose beneficiaries more than 60 years old and 4,55,64,330 (1st dose) and 19,01,296 (2nd dose) beneficiaries aged 45 to 60 years.

Over 31 lakh vaccination doses were administered in the last 24 hours. As on Day-97 of the vaccination drive (22nd April, 2021), 31,47,782 vaccine doses were given.19,25,873 beneficiaries were vaccinated across 28,683 sessions for 1st dose and 12,21,909 beneficiaries received 2nd dose of vaccine.
